The Mayans loved to have fun like any other culture, they had over 5000 different dances, they enjoyed music and dancing, the dances were because of religious beliefs as well as for fun. They played musical instruments like wooden flutes; trumpets made from seashells, wood or clay and played drums from turtle shells. Tobacco was smoked extensively by the Mayans for pleasure and during ritually. They also enjoyed drinking a native beverage made from cacao beans. Europeans later sweetened this beverage with sugar to make hot chocolate.
The Mayans also played sports, one of the sports they played was a games called Pok-A-Tok, this game is like volley ball except they couldn’t use their hands, feet or head to control and mauver the hard rubber ball. Instead it had to hit a marker or be propelled through a high stone ring. The game was played on an unusually shaped field. It is said that this game was taken very seriously and if you lost they would sacrifice you and your team to the gods as punishment.
