The Mayans didn’t mummify the dead like the ancient Egyptians did instead the Mayans did were buried and situated places which gave the dead access to other worlds. Some of the graves are purposely positioned to face north or west because it was thought by the Mayans that those were the directions leading to heaven. The others were buried in caves as it was thought to be the entrance to a new life or another world. Wether they were buried in a cave, monuments or underground there is always large amounts of effort put into assembling there graves to make sure they had a safe journey traveling to heaven. Most of the families when burying their dead they put a maize into there mouth, this is significant so they have food on the journey to the other world. Currency and jewels was an ideal offering provided during a burial, such as stone beads or a form of jade, these offerings would also be placed in there mouth. A whistle or small carvings of deities were burial equipment to help guide them to the spiritual world. They painted red on the bodies and the tombs to symbolise death and rebirth. They were positioned in the tombs and left to travel to heaven.
